Ya know, to most people, chickens in their yard would be odd. For some reason, though, it doesn't seem that strange...likely becuase of where we're from. When you HS mascot is a cow, all bets are off, I guess.
mmmm - i'm thinking chicken cordon bleu!just kidding. last spring, joe & thom and our friend's son, alex, thought it would be awesome to raise chickens. every spring the peeps go on sale at the local farm store. they called me while there getting DOG FOOD and dropped the peep idea on me - i'm thinking BIRD FLU immediately. but then i thought - well - a few around here would be ok perhaps. I mean after all, this was a working farm at one time.they show up with a complete peep house, heat lamps, feed and feed bowls......and TWENTY FIVE PEEPS! I was horrified. but OMG were they sooooo cute! then they started to grow up and become teenager peeps. they started to smell up the place (we had to keep them in the pole barn/garage until the weather got better) and they lost their cuddley sweetness and the boys werent impressed anymore. I posted a FREE TO GOOD HOME on the local yahoo freecycle board. I was very happy to say that a farm family stepped up to take them off our hands. They buy them every year for eggs to feed their family of 7 homeschooled kids. It was a blessing to them and a blessing to me.i do have kodak moment of the peeps though - i will post it so you can see :-)
